Scary 1st health blog! Women's periods! How they drive our confidence and relationships!
They do? Is this hocus pocus?
I thought so initially.
I was resistant.
I felt patronized.
I wanted periods to be logical.
I wanted me to be logical: clear, level headed, cool, in control, in the driving seat, unflappable, 'right', stable, unemotional, and calm.
Over time, I realised that is not how people experience me.
Over time, I understood that that is not how I experience myself.
It took me a ton of work to get there.
Finally I understood that I was a human being. One with a positive charge towards a certain disposition that was feminine. I was an Eve, a lady, with periods, and breasts, and fertility, and hormones.
A woman with plenty in common with her fellows but not 100% inline with her ancient ancestors due to the evolutionary gait.
This was science, suddenly, after consuming several Jared Diamond books.
Womenly things were not only invention, fantasy or folklore (to be patronised, dismissed or belittled).
Hormones were the real deal for me!
Why then, not embrace them and learn to ride on the crest of the female hormonal wave?
That is exactly the place I'm in as I embrace my last decade of menstruation.
My body is, in several important respects, still a stranger to me.
One day there will be a necessary ending. My periods will stop.
Until then I get them pretty frequently and normally.
If you are anywhere on the journey of menstruation (and not post-menopausal) you may appreciate Gabrielle Lichterman's site.
Lichterman is a magazine journalist who founded Hormone Horoscope, a website, social media suite and app, which tracks where you are on your cycle and sends a daily forecast based on the hormones you are experiencing.
She is great at talking to women and men, writes on a range of topics including career, relationships, money and mental health, and her advice embraces a range of personality types.
Sample:
"If you need to plan something stressful--for example, an important exam, surgical procedure, dental visit, oral presentation or driving test--you might be curious about whether there's a better time in your monthly cycle to do it. And, there is: It's your Week 2 (the week leading up to and including ovulation) or your Week 3 (the week right after ovulation).
But, choosing which week is best depends a lot on you. Here's why:
If you're generally not an anxious person and high estrogen in your Week 2 does not trigger major stress-outs, then you're the type who would benefit from scheduling high-stakes or potentially scary activities to occur duringWeek 2 of your cycle. On these days, rising estrogen tends to make you more confident, optimistic, hopeful and bold, helping you face the situation with courage.
If you're aware that you tend to have greater anxiety, in general, you have more intense anxious reactions to high-pressure situations than other folks and you've noticed anxiety symptoms pop up more frequently during your Week 2, then you're the type who would benefit from scheduling tense or potentially scary activities to occur during Week 3 of your cycle.
That's because you tend to be more sensitive to the way elevated estrogen in your Week 2 can trigger or intensify an anxious response"
